Buy Lumpwood Charcoal

Black Dog lumpwood charcoal is made in-house from Oak, Ash, and Beech harvested in the woodlands we manage across the South Downs. No chemical accelerants, no binders, no additives -  just pure hardwood charcoal that lights faster, burns hotter, and produces up to 75% fewer pollutants than standard charcoal. Available in 3kg and 7.5kg bags, delivered anywhere in mainland UK.

What is lumpwood charcoal?

Lumpwood charcoal is made by burning wood slowly in a low-oxygen environment,  a process called pyrolysis. This method drives off moisture and organic compounds to leave behind almost pure carbon in the shape of the original wood. The result is irregular chunks of charcoal that retain the natural structure of the timber.

Unlike charcoal briquettes, lumpwood contains no binders, fillers, or added chemicals. It lights more quickly, reaches a higher temperature, and burns more cleanly. For anyone who takes their fire seriously (whether that's a BBQ, a chiminea, or a fire pit) lumpwood is the natural choice.

Why Black Dog lumpwood charcoal Is different

Most lumpwood charcoal sold in the UK is imported. It travels thousands of miles before it reaches you, and it's often produced in ways that are difficult to verify or trace. Black Dog is different, we make our own charcoal, from trees we've felled ourselves, in woodland we actively manage in West Sussex.

That means we know exactly what goes into every bag. And the answer is simple: nothing but hardwood.

  • No chemical accelerants or additives

  • Up to 75% fewer pollutants than standard charcoal

  • Lights faster than imported lumpwood or briquettes

  • Burns hotter and holds temperature well

  • Made in-house - not bought in and rebagged

  • Sourced from sustainably managed woodland

  • Rated 5 stars by customers on Google

The wood behind our lumpwood charcoal

The quality of lumpwood charcoal starts with the wood. We use mixed hardwoods - primarily Oak, Ash, and Beech - harvested from the woodland we manage across the South Downs as part of our woodland management work.

Hardwood is denser than softwood, which means it carbonises into a heavier, more energy-rich charcoal that burns longer and more consistently. Oak, Ash, and Beech are among the best-performing hardwoods for charcoal production. Chosen not just because they grow in our woodland, but because they produce an outstanding result.

Lumpwood charcoal FAQs

What is lumpwood charcoal made from?

Our lumpwood charcoal is made from mixed hardwoods (Oak, Ash, and Beech) harvested from the woodland we manage in West Sussex. The wood is carbonised in-house using a pyrolysis process that removes moisture and organic compounds, leaving behind dense, pure hardwood charcoal.

Is lumpwood charcoal better than briquettes?

For most uses, yes. Lumpwood charcoal lights faster, burns hotter, and contains no binders or fillers. Briquettes burn for longer and more evenly, which some cooks prefer for low-and-slow BBQ. But for general use, lumpwood gives a cleaner, more natural burn.

Does lumpwood charcoal contain chemicals?

Black Dog lumpwood charcoal contains no chemical accelerants, binders, or additives. It's pure carbonised hardwood, nothing else. That means no chemical taste, no acrid smoke, and up to 75% fewer pollutants than standard charcoal.

How long does lumpwood charcoal burn?

A well-lit load of our lumpwood charcoal will hold a good temperature for 1.5–2.5 hours depending on conditions and airflow. Because it's dense hardwood, it retains heat well once established. For longer sessions, add more charcoal once the first load is going.

Can I use lumpwood charcoal in a chiminea or fire pit?

Yes, our lumpwood charcoal works well in chimineas, fire pits, and BBQs. It can be used on its own or combined with firewood for a longer, more atmospheric burn.
